Congratulations on the arrival of your new baby. We share with you this extraordinary moment — one that brings with it the joy of parenthood alongside questions and a mix of emotions. A diagnosis of Down syndrome for your child is not the end of the road; it is the beginning of a deeply human journey, and we are honoured to be part of it with you.
Give Yourself Time
It is entirely natural to feel conflicted right now — uncertain, anxious, perhaps even afraid. Do not rush yourself, and do not judge what you are feeling. Give yourself space to breathe and reflect. What you feel in this moment does not measure the love you have for your child.
Seek Early Support
The earlier you begin, the better. Early intervention — through occupational therapy, speech therapy, or physiotherapy — makes a real difference in your child's development. Do not hesitate to reach out to the Association for specialist guidance on the first steps to take.
Do Not Believe Everything You Hear
A great deal of the information circulating about Down syndrome is based on outdated ideas that do not reflect today's reality. Children with Down syndrome learn, play, form social relationships, and live full lives. Rely on trusted sources and connect with families who have walked this path before you.
Your Child First, the Diagnosis Second
Your child is your child above all else — with their own personality, needs, and joy. Down syndrome is part of their identity, but it does not define them entirely. See them as a person with vast potential, not as a medical condition in need of a "solution".
You Are Not Alone
There is a whole community of families who have lived through the same moment you are experiencing now, who moved forward and built beautiful lives. Saut Down Syndrome Society is here to support and guide you at every step — from early diagnosis to education, training, and community inclusion.
We are here with you.
